TREATMENT WASTEWATER FROM CASSAVA PROCESSING PLANTS BY ANAEROBIC PROCESS WITH PHASES SEPARATION
Abstract
The physical separation of the acidogenic and methanogenic phases constitutes a proposal to reduce the problem of instability in the anaerobic digestion of wastewater of the cassava processing. This experiment was carried out in two anaerobic reactors. The acidogenic reactor was inoculated with anaerobic sludge taken from wastewater treatment station of Maringá, State of Paraná. The five-liter reactor was operated with a four-day hydraulic retention time. Its affluent concentration was 3,000, 4,500 and 6,000 mg/L and 15 mg/L of COD and free cyanide respectively. The 20-liter methanogenic reactor was filled with 2x2cm pieces of dry bamboo and inoculated with methanogenic sludge. This reactor was run with a four-day hydraulic retention time and its affluent was the effluent of the acidogenic reactor. The results showed an effective reduction of toxic compounds such as 97% of COD, 87% of volatile acidity and 96.7% of free cyanide.Downloads
