Large sites of São Paulo State are typically underlain by sandstone of Bauru Group. The subsoil upper layer is constituted by high porous and normally unsaturated, reddish, fine clayey sand. Similar soils are found in the state of Paraná, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and other regions. This kind of soil in presence of water, when under tension suffers collapse provoking brusque volume reduction and causing damages to construction. This article shows the execution of retaining walls, focusing the constructive aspects and harmful influence in neighboring constructions. Average soil parameters of the region where the problems occurred are supplied. The article shows cases of pathology due to the non-observance of certain constructive cares. It is emphasized the importance of considering the collapsible aspects of this type of soil in engineering, as well as recommendations are supplied with the intention to contribute to future designs.Downloads
