Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the toponyms of the public squares of the city of Maringá PR Brazil, based on a historical research from primary sources. Toponymy sought the non-linguistic historical significance for the names of the squares, which totaled ninety-nine on January 2000, contextualizing them within the period these public places were given their names. It has been observed that names did not mean much to the population, since, in most cases, the community did not even know who was the person concerned whose name had been given to the public space. Denomination of public squares in Maringá squares should not merely be an unknown item in the municipal archives, but a consciousness endeavor work to perpetuate the public person honored in a public space
