This paper analyzes the behavior of columns under eccentric loading, with concrete compressive strength of around 80 MPa. The columns have cross section area of 15 x 30 cm at the test region, and an effective length of 174 cm. Six columns were tested. The main variables are the stirrup volumetric ratio and the longitudinal steel ratio. Articulation devices and load application devices were mounted in order to approach the proposed theoretical model as much as possible. The columns with smaller stirrup volumetric ratio showed a brittle mode of failure accompanied by the buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement. Differently, the columns with larger stirrup volumetric ratio presented ductile failure accompanied by concrete crushing on the most compressed side of the column. Theoretical models were used to obtain values of the maximum axial loads and ultimate flexural moment. The results were compared with the experimental ones obtained in the tests.Downloads
