Abstract

Aiming to determine the factor restricting cultivation in abandoned Luvisol and Fluvic Neosol areas, the electrical conductivity (EC) and phosphorus levels of samples from the 0-20 cm layer were compared to those of an adjacent cultivated area. Texture and pH were also measured. EC was above 7 dS m-1 in most of the Neosol abandoned area samples and above 4 dS m-1in the Luvisol samples, while all samples from the cultivated areas were below 4 dS m-1. Phosphorus and pH had values suitable for plants, except for low P in the Luvisol abandoned area. The texture ranged from loamy to sandy. Salinity proved to be the limiting factor in both abandoned areas, while low P level may be a limiting factor in the Luvisol area.

Possui graduação em Engenharia Química pela Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (1983), graduação em Química Industrial pela Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (1980), mestrado em Agronomia (Ciências do Solo) pela Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (1988) e doutorado em Agronomia (Solos e Nutrição de Plantas) pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (2000). Atualmente é professor adjunto 1 da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Tem experiência na área de Agronomia, com ênfase em Manejo e Conservação do Solo, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: fósforo, solos de semi-árido, fertilização fosfatada Currículo Lattes
