Germination and health of soybean (<em>Glycine max</em> (L.) Merrill) seeds harvested at different times
Abstract
The climatic conditions that occur between soybean seeds physiological maturity and harvest dates have great influence on their quality. Thus, an experiment was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the effect of delayed harvest upon seed germination and health of three soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cultivars. Seeds of Savana, Doko RC and UFV-10 cultivars were harvested at R8 maturity stage, and weekly, until 70 days after this period. After that, seeds were evaluated in laboratory for germination, health (blotter test) and moisture content determination (105oC during 24 hours). The results showed that harvest time of Doko RC, UFV-10 and Savana cultivars can be delayed for 56, 28 and 14 days, respectively, maintaining seed germination above 80%. There was great difference between the soybean cultivars in tolerance to delayed harvest. ‘Doko RC’ showed great tolerance to delayed harvest, ‘Savana’ small tolerance, while ‘UFV-10’ had intermediate behavior. The reduction in germination potential had great relationship (r = -0,96) with the increase in the percentage of infected seeds by microorganismsDownloads
