Abstract

The behavior of 16 sheep was reported during a twelve-month period, comprising hot and cold seasons, for three days each month, from 6 to18h. The eight Texel and eight Hampshire Down sheep, aged three and four years, were analyzed with regard to grazing, rumination, resting in the sun and in the shade, respectively, and watering. Four animals of each breed were sheared. Quantity of green leaves, crude protein and pasture FDA were analyzed. Climate data were reported hourly and rainfall monthly. Rise in shade seeking was recorded in proportion to increase in solar radiation. Silk oak grove was used for shade and leaf consumption. Only the shade of the pen in the eucalyptus grove was used. Grazing conditions and climatic variables may have changed sheep’s behavior. Sheared animals were more tolerant to the sunrays. Although breeds have adapted themselves extremely well to the region, the importance of groves must be enhanced.
