Determination of <em>in vitro</em> digestibility of <em>Cynodon</em> grasses through different methods

Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility of Cynodon cultivars using ANKOM’s DAISY system and the traditional method proposed by Tilley and Terry (1963). Five grasses were tested: tifton 44, tifton 85, coast-cross, estrela-roxa and porto-rico. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design (p > 0.05) in a 2x5 (two methods and five cultivars) factorial scheme. No difference in digestibility (p > 0.05) was observed between the cultivars when evaluated by Tilley and Terry’s method but there were differences (p < 0.05) when digestibility was evaluated by ANKOM’s DAISY methodology. On the other hand, when cultivars were analyzed separately, variations between methodologies were observed in dry matter and organic matter digestibility in vitro.

Geraldo Tadeu dos Santos concluiu o doutorado na Universite de Rennes I em 1987, em Produção e Fisiologia Animal. Atualmente é Professor Titular da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Publicou vários artigos em periódicos especializados e de trabalhos em anais de eventos, capítulos de livros/anais e livros/anais publicados. Participou de vários eventos no exterior e no Brasil. Orientou e co-orientou diversas dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado. Tem, igualmente, atuada na orientação de trabalhos de iniciação científica e de conclusão de curso na área de Zootecnia. Atua na Produção Animal, com ênfase em Avaliação de Alimentos para Animais, sistema de produção de leite, período seco e de transição da vaca leiteira, manejo nutricional de alimentar de bezerras, novilhas leiteiras e vacas em lactação. Em suas atividades profissionais interagiu com diversos colaboradores em co-autorias de trabalhos científicos.
