Abstract

The early development of Leporinus friderici (Bloch, 1794) is characterized in this research. Eggs and larvae were obtained from artificial spawning performed in Volta Grande hatchery (CEMIG), from February to March 1995. Juveniles were taken from samples of the Upper Paraná River Basin. Thirty eggs, 114 larvae and 21 juveniles were analyzed. Eggs are sphericals, transparents and non-adhesives, mean diameter 2.53 mm, perivitelline space 0.74 mm, mean yolk diameter 0.94 mm. Incubation time was 13h20min. at 27.6ºC. Larvae showed two pigments in frontal region, a long intestine reaching near the caudal fin, and pigments along the ventral margin of the body. Myomere number ranged from 35 to 37
