Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify themes regarding family, expressed in the cartoon images of a Brazilian artist. A retrospective analysis of the representations in Monica and Cebolinha magazines, from 1973 to 2001 was performed using a ramified diagram of the Calgary Model to Evaluate Family (CMEF). The middle class family was the family model identified in the stories with two children at most, and Caucasian blood relationships. Regarding sex, woman was seen as a mother and housewife and man as the family provider. Home environment is shown in stories since 1986 and the family meeting occurs during the meals. The prevalent family cycle is the family with small children. Religious belief is related to Christianity represented by animated cartoons by the crucifix, the priest, confessional and baptism denoting values, myths and family ritual.
