Epidemiologic data of cleft lip and palate bearers from a specialized institution of Londrina, Parana State

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to describe the characteristics of 377 cleft patients assisted by an institution of Londrina, State of Paraná. For that purpose, the prevalence of the clefts in relation to gender, pregnancy maternal smoke habits until the third month, cleft family history, families’ social level, and parents’ ages when cleft bearer was conceived were evaluated. The highest prevalence was observed for cleft lip and palate (59.9%) the ratio between genders was 1.5 male: 1.0 female 9.26% of the population belonged to the lower class and the paternal and maternal ages were respectively 25.5  7.0 and 9.8  6.9 year. The results of χ2 for the association between the variables and cleft types were positive in relation to gender (χ20,05;2 =26.3) and paternal age in the conceived period
