<b>Human development in the municipalities of south Brazil: Recent evolution and the poverty vicious circle
Abstract
The evolution of the Municipal Human Development Index (IDHM) in the southern region of Brazil, estimated by the United Nations Development Program – UNDP, is analyzed. Two types of comparison are made, namely, the municipalities of south Brazil are compared to the average performance of IDHM in southern Brazil; and the municipalities of the southern region of Brazil are compared to the Brazilian average IDHM. Results showed that the municipalities within in the virtuous circle remained in this condition during the analyzed period and the municipalities in the vicious circle also remained in the same situation. Human development pattern in southern Brazil reinforced gains in economic growth whereas gains in terms of social indicators remained below the national average.
