Social representations of Primary Health Care professionals about aspects of the Venezuelan migration process to Brazil
Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze the social representations of health professionals from Primary Health Care (PHC) in Southern Brazil about aspects of the Venezuelan migration process to the country, as well as its impacts on social relationships and interactions between professionals and migrants. The study involved 22 PHC professionals from two health units in a city in Southern Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The results were organized into four themes, focusing on the social representations regarding: 1) the community and the territory of the health units; 2) Venezuela and characteristics of the Venezuelan migration process; 3) the Venezuelan migrant subject; and 4) the impacts on the discrimination of Venezuelan migrants. Social representations have been identified which associate Venezuela and the Venezuelan migration process with a series of hardships, as well as discriminatory notions and practices towards the migrant population. The need for public policies that create fissures in these social representations is highlighted, aiming to promote health and mitigate discriminatory practices towards the population.
