The intercultural clinic as a mode of specialized psychological care for immigrants: a university extension project
Abstract
This article aims to present and systematize the experience of the Intercultural Clinic (CI), an extension project of the Psychology Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, which has developed as an adapted clinical device focused on the qualified listening of immigrants and refugees in Florianópolis (SC). The article discusses (1) the historical and contextual aspects of the activities developed by CI, (2) the theoretical and methodological foundations that support the clinical practice, and (3) presents the clinical device and the functioning of psychological care, along with its contributions and repercussions. The adopted clinical model is based on the co-therapy device, inspired by SAPSIR© (Canada). Its methodology integrates the theoretical and methodological approach of Ethnopsychiatry, grounded in psychic universality through the uniqueness of culture, which assigns a central role to cultural elements in the expression of psychic suffering. In addition to clinical care, the project also promoted and integrated activities for training, awareness-raising, and social participation, aimed at welcoming and integrating immigrants into Brazilian society. The experience of CI is shared with the aim of highlighting a clinical device that addresses alterity and the identity of immigrants and refugees, seeking to help them reconstruct their histories and meanings in a new context, through continuity of self. Furthermore, CI serves as a space for training in intercultural clinical psychology.
