Abstract

In this article we debate the possibilities and limits of the ethnographic reporting, analysing the rich Carybé’s travel jornals to Benin in the years 1969 and 1987. When coming across his impressions about the culture and the daily life in this small African country located in the region of the Gulf of Guinea, we decided to put the syncronic description built by the artist in the light of history. From the historical and political relations of the kingdoms of Benin, Oyo and Daomé, elaborated from na Africanist perspective, it was possible to understand the contradictions in the formation process of the Republic of Benin and its cultural interpenetrations, the colonialism and African resistence against centuries of slavery. In addition, we made a diacronic analysis of the records in Carybé’s jornals and his search for an asthetics and stylistics of African heritage.
