Alterity in Pero Vaz de Caminha’s <em>Letter</em> on the discovery of Brazil

Abstract

Pero Vaz de Caminha’s Letter to King Manuel of Portugal is reread in the light of post-colonial theory. Emphasis is given to the colonial encounter between the Tupinambás and the Europeans. The former are analyzed as “others” or colonized objects whereas the Portuguese are investigated as colonial subjects with panoptican and universalist ideology. Information generation, utopian notion of the “good savage”, body details, agency and mimicry show not only the worldling of the natives but also their reaction to objectification

Possui graduação em Letras Anglo-Portuguesas pela Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Jandaia do Sul (1984), graduação em Filosofia - Faculdades Associadas do Ipiranga (1983), graduação em Inglês e Literaturas em Língua Inglesa, Literatura Italiana e Latina - Royal University of Malta (1964), graduação em Filosofia - Royal University of Malta (1962); doutorado em Teoria da Literatura pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1988). Atualmente é professor associado da Universidade Estadual de Maringá; com publicações em Acta Scientiarum (UEM), Teoria e Prática da Educação (UEM), Diálogos (UEM), Gragoatá (UFF), Revista de Letras (UNESP), Revista Letras (UFPR), Mimesis (USC, Bauru).
