Contributions of ethnopsychoanalysis in field research: the researcher's place in data construction
Abstract
According to Devereux (1977), data in human sciences research present themselves in three fundamental dimensions: (1) the behavior of the subject; (2) the disturbances generated by the presence of the observer and their activities; and (3) the behavior of the researcher, including their anxieties, defense mechanisms, strategies, and decisions. For Devereux, the third aspect is the most important, yet it is often overlooked in research. Based on this perspective, this article aims to reflect on the phenomena of transference and countertransference present in the research setting, using as reference a study conducted with Haitian immigrants. The research, developed as a master's dissertation, sought to understand the impacts of racism on the experiences of these immigrants. Seven Haitian participants were interviewed, including four men and three women. We reflect on the emotions mobilized in the researcher during interactions with participants, as well as on the position occupied by the researcher within the relational dynamics established throughout the research process. Furthermore, we consider how the researcher’s attributes — such as gender, social position, nationality, and race — influenced the data construction and the relationships built. Drawing on Devereux's contributions, we highlight the importance of carefully analyzing transference and countertransference aspects that emerge during the development of research in the human sciences.
