The selectiv garbage collection program in Ituiutaba-MG

Abstract

The selective garbage collection program is to be considerated one of the solutions to garbage generation for the purpose of recycling paper, glass, plastic and metal materials. The municipality of Ituiutaba, situated in theTriângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba microregion, has had this selective garbage collection program since 2001, and has operated as a cooperative association since 2003, when it became Coopercicla. The main objective of this paper was to analyse the efficiency of the selective garbage collection program (Coopercicla) installed in Ituiutaba-MG. The method used included the drawing up of a theoretical reference to give support to the analysis; field work at Coopercicla and the application of a questionnaire to the population in the Platina neighborhood. The results showed that most of the neighborhoods in this town are contemplated with the selective garbage collection program, however, the effective participation of the contemplated population was not verified, this point should be bettered. We were able to see that, although 99% of the population interviewed has environmental consciousness about the selective garbage collection program, 45% of these people do not collaborate by separating materials for recycling.
