Abstract

This paper approaches the relation between land use and regulation in metropolitan areas from the standpoint of the analysis and spatialization of revenues from IPTU (in portuguese, “Imposto Predial Territorial Urbano”, a municipal real estate tax charged in Brazil). Apart from representing an important source of revenue, IPTU stands as a possible tool for regulating urban land. In metropolitan areas, both land use and regulation are marked by peculiarities, particularly due to the integration of the land market and the differential valuing of urban land.
