Abstract

May 2024 will go down in history for Rio Grande do Sul due to the massive floods and the inadequate response to them. This editorial explores these and other disasters as more than just natural events, aiming to dismantle the notion that "natural" disasters are even possible. The goal is to encourage relational and contextual explanations for these phenomena, enabling complex responses to our interactions with various forms of life on Earth, not just human. In this complexity, we hope to understand how recent extreme events continuously expose the brutal inequality in how they impact both human and non-human populations. The concept of water intrusion draws on Isabelle Stengers' idea of "Gaia Intrusion" and can help reveal the political and epistemological exhaustion of the Western modernizing offensive embodied in neoliberal capitalism.
