Abstract

Violence is a problem that presents high numbers of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and causes a great impact on the working process of the nursing staff that deals daily with the assistance of this nature. This is a qualitative and descriptive research that aims at the identification of the nursing team’s perception on the care of victims of violence. The population in study was composed by 12 members of the nursing team of a public university hospital located in the city of Curitiba-Paraná-Brazil. Data were collected between August and October 2008, through a semi-structured interview. These data were analyzed using thematic content analysis, from which three categories emerged: definition of violence, omission of violence and victim’s care. Although some workers reported that they feel satisfaction on working at the Emergency Service, others reported to feel stressed and overloaded by the work in the same area. The study revealed that the high demand of care on multiple profiles of violence has influenced the quality of the services given.
