Abstract

The objective of the study was to describe the perceptions of parents of newborns hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit about the interaction of family with nursing staff. It is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study related to the family. Information was collected through open interviews analyzed by content analysis. The study subjects were twelve parents of newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a major hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The results show the feelings of having a child admitted into a NICU and perceptions related to interaction with the nursing, which may constitute a source of security, tranquility and support that facilitate the experience, or a source of insecurity and discomfort that can make the experience more traumatic. The nursing staff, because is more in touch with parents can promote the bonding between parents and newborn and minimize the suffering of the family as a whole.
