Abstract

The food consumption in childhood is closely associated with the profile of health and nutrition, particularly among children under two years. Aimed to investigate the perception of the mother before the breast feeding in the face of childcare. Exploratory descriptive study, with qualitative approach, in which it used the technique of semi-structured interview. The scenario was the Núcleo de Atenção Médica Integrada (NAMI), located in the city of Fortaleza-CE, and the Serviço de Saúde Matos Dourado. It is the period August/2006 to June/2007. The participants were 22 mothers who accompanied their children in consultation with childcare. The data analysis was carried out by the saturation of answers from which emerged the categories: Cultural trial on Breastfeeding, The mothers milk not maintains and Influence of the job Breastfeeding. It was clear that, despite the knowledge, the mothers were complaining of milk, passed in the introduction of complementary foods before the six months, and justify the weaning with the need to work and empirical knowledge acquired in culture. Therefore, health education strategies are important, because to allow nutritionist develop activities targeted to the principles of food education, facilitating the critical awareness development of key role in the child nutrition.
