Characterization of live births in Londrina (PR) from live birth information system (LBIS) data, 1994 to 2007 - doi: 10.4025/cienccuidsaude.v9i2.6903

Abstract

The Live Birth Information System (LBIS), which is based on the Birth Certificate (BC), is available in Londrina (PR) since September 1993. By means of LBIS database, this study aimed at describing the time series of the variables contained in BC in Londrina (PR). It is a time series research, in which the sample was composed by BC of mothers living in the city during 1994 to 2007 period. The total number of live births was 105.776. Among maternal´s characteristics stood out the decrease in percentage of teenage mothers and the increase in mothers older than 35 years. Regarding newborns’ characteristics, there was predominance of males, and an increase in the proportion of children with low birth weight, preterm and with Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes between 8 and 10. The prevalence of cesarean section and the slight increase in multiple pregnancies characterized pregnancy and childbirth. The ISBL is an information system that can be useful for assessing conditions during pregnancy and puerperium, and for redirecting actions aimed at improving the health of both mother and child.
