Abstract

This article is aimed at reporting the experience of a Nursing Consultation supported by the Interpersonal Relations Theory carried out from March to May 2008, with patients with mental disorder. The nurses' professional attitude was highlighted in the phases of: pre-interaction, introductory or orientation, emerging identities and the fourth phase or conclusion. It was explicit the importance of the nursing consultation in the work process and the applicability of the theory. During nursing visits, it is possible to act therapeutically, observe, listen, and understand nonverbal communication, with the benefit of the development of strategies that aim to improve quality of life and search for the meaning of life. When recounting the experience of a nursing consultation it was found that the interpersonal relationship, with the purpose to alleviate not only the physical pain of others, but care for the whole individual in a therapeutic way, provides a reflective look, with quality and professional visibility.
