The verbal communication nurse-patient at the perioperation stage of cardiac surgery

Abstract

This descriptive exploratory research had the purpose to verify the importance of the verbal communication between nurse and patient in the perioperation period of cardiac surgery in a University Hospital of Uberlandia-MG. The population consisted of 13 patients who were submitted to cardiac surgery, from March to April 2007. Data was collected through an instrument comprising socio-demographic and clinical information, as well as verbal communication during the assistance of the nurse in the surgical procedure. The analysis was carried out by means of frequency distribution. From the 13 interviewed individuals, 69% were female, 54% were married, 70% had basic elementary schooling, and 70% were white. Age varied from 28 to 74 years, average 57.6 years. From them, 54% were emotionally shaken by the expectations of the surgery before the guidelines were shown by the nurses during hospital admission. The same result was obtained after guidelines on the surgical procedure. Fifty-four percent of the patients were instructed by nurses and 100% of the interviewed ones had related that the communication between nurse-patient is important in the perioperation stage of cardiac surgery. Results lead to think that verbal communication effectively promotes good relationship between patients and professional, which is critical on the quality of care through the systematization of perioperative nursing care.
