Abstract

Breast cancer is the disease most feared by women, due to its high incidence and biopsychosocial impact. The purpose of this study was analyzing knowledge, attitudes and health and social practices of six women suffering from breast cancer. The methodological strategy was life story and reflexive interview. The results were analyzed using content analysis, thematic modality and organized in two elements of analysis: the individual history and the group history. The categories that emerged were: Fears and losses, Social and family support, and Change of values, indicating that the experience of breast cancer is a turning point in their lives, causing a whirlwind of emotions and feelings, but by facing it give them power want to live as intensely as possible, changing a set of values about life.

Author Biography

  • Márcia Regina Cangiani Fabbro, UFSCar
    possui graduação em Enfermagem pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1985), especialização em enfermagem obstétrica pela UNIFESP (1985), mestrado em Educação pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1996) e doutorado em Educação pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2006). Atualmente é professor doutor da Universidade Federal de São Carlos. Tem experiência na área de Enfermagem, com ênfase em Saúde da Mulher, atuando no ensino, pesquisa e extensão nos seguintes temas: gênero, trabalho feminino, câncer de mama, aleitamento materno e familia com interface na educação. Coordena o Programa de Saúde da Mulher na Unidade Saúde Escola da Universidade Federal de São Carlos, é membro do Cômite Técnico de Saude da Mulher da Secretaria de Saúde de São Carlos, atuando especialmente na formulação de políticas públicas e capacitação de recursos humanos para a saúde da mulher.
