Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to analyze occupational accidents occurred with healthcare personnel at different steps of the Management Plan for Health Services Waste (MPHSW) of a hospital in São Paulo city. Data was collected from the Occupational Accidents Report filed in the hospital Service of Engineering of Security and Occupational Medicine, from 2002 to 2006. One-hundred and fifty accidents report were examined. From them 78 (52%) were selected for research. The majority (67.12%) of the healthcare personnel that suffered injuries were female (83.56%) nursing assistants with an average of 37.5 years of age. Needles sticks injuries were the highest cause (80.77%), the upper limbs were the most injured areas in both gender (87.18%); 69.23% of the occupational accidents occurred at the wastes segregation stage followed by the packaging (23.08%). It was concluded that the adequate separation of perforative or cutting material is one of the most important aspects in preventing occupational accidents, as well as its notification, once it allows more effective actions, avoiding people, economical and social losses.

    Atualmente é enfermeira assessora da Câmara de Apoio Técnico do Conselho Regional de Enfermagem de São Paulo. Atuou como consultora do Hospital e Maternidade da Cruz Azul de São Paulo e Hospital São Camilo Pompéia no gerenciamento de resíduos. Tem experiência na área de Enfermagem, com ênfase em controle de infecção hospitalar onde atuou como enfermeira destas mesmas instituições na CCIH durante 10 e 2 anos respectivamente. Sua experiência com resíduos veio com as publicações sobre a necessidade de um plano de gerenciamento na primeira instituição acima descrita. A partir de então passou a estudar o assunto e várias palestras passou a ministrar em diversas ocasiões. Têm realizado consultorias a algumas instituições sobre gerenciamento de resíduos. Hoje atua na assessoria da Câmara Técnica do COREN SP auxiliando em pareceres e em projetos como no de Segurança do Paciente. Currículo Lattes
