Abstract

This study aimed at identifying, in the national and international scientific production, nursing actions recommended with regard to breastfeeding in adolescence. An integrative review of the literature published from 1988 to 2008 was performed without restriction to language and by correlating the indexing terms: nursing, breastfeeding, adolescent(s), adolescence and maternal age in the databases on the website for the Health Virtual Library, namely LILACS, MEDLINE and SCIELO, and in the specialized areas ADOLEC and BDENF. From the 60 nursing studies found on breastfeeding, 15 referred to adolescence. Studies addressing different types of nursing support to breastfeeding by young mothers (8) and protection to such practice (8) were noteworthy. They were followed by those addressing nursing actions in clinical management (6) and advice on the subject (5). It was concluded that among the numerous nursing publications on that topic, there is an incipient production of studies on breastfeeding by adolescents which needs to be expanded, considering the relevance of this phenomenon in the current sanitary cenario.
