Abstract
The objective of this study was to apprehend the perceptions of the nursing team regarding the main concepts of care given to the carrier of mental disorder in the emergency room. This is a descriptive research accomplished in the Emergency Room of a General Hospital of Curitiba-Paraná-Brazil in 2008 with 4 nurses, 2 technicians and 3 nursing auxiliaries. Data was collected using the technique of Group Discussion, and the concepts approached were: nursing care, human being, environment, health and mental disorder, team work, human and therapeutic communication. The results were presented and discussed in the categories: “Nursing care and the carrier of mental disorder: perception of the group” and “Use of the main concepts in nursing care and the carrier of mental disorder in the emergency room”. The subjects recognized that in practice not always the carrier of mental disorder is treated as a human being; they have difficulties to work with such patient because they do not feel prepared for it in an effective way. It was concluded that the discussions provide reflections regarding nursing practice and, especially, on the care given to people with mental disorder. The group has shown interest in improving their knowledge on therapeutic communication.Downloads
