Abstract
The family theme is little addressed in nursing education, being an important issue for processes of continuing education in mental health services. In this work we seek evidence from studies carried out on nursing care given to the families of psychiatric patients’ elements for continuous education. It is an integrative review conducted from searching the databases Scielo and Lilacs in the month of June 2011. From the descriptors: psychiatric nursing, family nursing, family and helping behavior, we selected 8 articles, which were treated on the basis of thematic content analysis. It was found that the actions directed to the family of individuals with severe mental illness should be structured so as to promote and enhance the relationship between family / work / service, by understanding the family as a unique and essential partner for the care given to the patient. The results of this study provide subsidies to deal with the attention to the family in the process of continuous education aimed at mental health nurses.
