Knowledge of diabetic patient type 2 antidiabetic agents

Abstract
The lack of understanding for the patient of the prescribed medicine can lead to a treatment with unsatisfactory results. In the diabetic patients type 2, privately, user of oral antidiabetic agents, when initiating the drug therapy the health team must evaluate the patient how much its capacity of selfcare, motivation and age among others factors for the reach of the desired effect of the medicine. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the information that the diabetic patient type 2 has concerning the oral antidiabetic agents, in a hospital of education, in the city of Ribeirão Preto-São Paulo, in the year of 2003. We interview 31 (100%) patient, ones interned in a unit of medical clinic, the period of January to March of 2003, after the informed assent of the patients. The gotten data showed that 32.2% does not know to relate the name of the used medication, 51.6% take the medicine in inadequate schedule and the majority has only slight knowledge about the mechanism of action of the prescribed oral antidiabetic agents for their treatment. The gotten results point the urgent necessity to search effective strategies of education to the diabetic patient considering theirs individual differences about the age, motivation with the treatment and capacity of selfcare. We conclude that is necessary to reorganize the orientation for the patients in use of oral antidiabetic agent, supplying information that make possible to prevent the mistakes and a better adhesion of the patient in the care of his health.Downloads
