Abstract

This article deals with a practice of group education. Its objective was to develop an educational health care proposal geared towards foot self-care in people with diabetes mellitus, envisioning prevention and care, given the complication involved in a diabetic foot. Theoretical orientation was based upon Orem’s Self-Care Theory and Liberation Education by Paulo Freire. The study was developed in an ambulatory unit in Santa Catarina, involving 10 people with diabetes mellitus. It was carried out based on the integration of the nursing consultation and the education group, following the formation phases denominated as 4R. The deficits of self-care were sought, and discussed in the group for the construction of knowledge in the area of self-care. It became clear that when people construct knowledge based on their own context, it becomes easily incorporated into their care process, more comprehensible, and better accepted into their daily life.
