Abstract

Cervical cancer is a problem of Public Health in our country. The literature evidences its prevention through education actions in health and better understanding of the population. The research investigated the women's knowledge about prevention of cervical cancer. The qualitative approach was based on semi-structured interview with five women between 25-60 years of age, users of a Health Unit located in a municipal district in the Vale dos Sinos-RS. It was observed that women have a lack of knowledge related to the effective prevention of cervical cancer, they feel shame and fear, and they do not follow the periodicity of examination as recommended by the Health Ministry. It was concluded that the nurses need to be more active in the health education approach disseminating information about prevention, in order to correct wrong information acquired from friends and from the media.
