Abstract

This is a research carried out in an emergency unit of a public service in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, with the objective of learning the experiences of the nursing team on the welcome strategy implemented in the service since 2004. The data were collected by means of nine observations and nine semi-structured interviews with nurses and nursing technicians. The content analysis led to describe the organizational context where the practices are included, as well as to find out that the nursing professional lives in an frantic environment and finds himself or herself before a complex range of needs what results in moments of conflicts. Although they show awareness about the goal of the welcome proposals during the risk classification, many professionals demonstrate that they do not understand their scope and identify the welcome only as a part of the care addressed to just one site. Thus, the attitude of the nursing team also represents a great challenge before the implementation of the welcome strategy.
