Consideration about the overburden in familias of mentally ill individuals

Abstract

This paper has as objective to discuss the deinstitutionalization process of mentally ill individuals, and the consequent overburden suffered by their families in the process. This is a non-systematic literature review research, the proposal of which is to develop a theoretical reflection about the aspects that involve the work of caregivers for mentally ill individuals, aiming to keep them in their own families. The conclusions point that the need to reformulate the attention given to the families must be met within the substitutive services and in the community as well, because when faced with the inevitable process of deinstitutionalization and with the responsibility of caring alone, it is understandable that families resist to the new treatment proposal and demand more from the mental health services and the workers.
