BRASIL E MÉXICO NAS CADEIAS GLOBAIS DE VALOR: ANÁLISE COMPARATIVA BASEADA NA INTENSIDADE TECNOLÓGICA DA PRODUÇÃO INDUSTRIAL
Abstract
This study aims compare the Brazilian and Mexican integration in the Global Value Chains (GVCs), according to the technological intensity of industrial production (1990-2013). The analysis is based on the recent OECD / WTO indexes, which refer to the participation of the countries in the GVCs. These indicators suggest that the industrial group of medium-high technological intensity was the most integrated in the GVCs, both for Brazil and for Mexico. However, it is observed that the Mexican industrial sectors, in general, are more integrated than the Brazilians ones. When analyzing the technological balance of payments (TBP) of these sectors, it was verified that for Brazil, the higher the technological intensity, the greater the trade deficit, while for Mexico the higher the technological intensity, the lower the deficit, signaling that the Mexican industrial sectors with higher technological intensity have greater insertion potential in GVCs compared to Brazilian’s ones. Therefore, the TBP and its dynamic relation with the GVCs greatly explain the insertion differential of the two economies in the global production.
