The Brazilian manufacturing sectors in the COVID-19 crisis
Abstract
This article studies the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Brazilian manufacturing industry. For that, aggregated data were used to contextualize the macroeconomic dynamics over 2020 and 2021. Also, the study investigates the sectoral effects from the analysis of data from the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM) and from the Annual Industrial Survey (PIA) in order to understand the sectoral impacts of the economic and social crisis engendered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the behavior of the manufacturing industry in the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic imposes itself as a fundamental theme for industrializing public policies. The results indicated that sectors producing intermediate goods and capital goods recovered faster and with a level of production higher than pre-pandemic values in relation to sectors producing consumer goods. Our evidence also points out the existence of an expansion of industrial employment in several industrial sectors.
