Abstract

The capitalist system led to the aggravation of socioeconomic inequalities. Faced with the State's inabilityto provide for individual needs, civil society became organized into what came to be known as the thirdsector. In this kind of organization, non-profit entities are created to fill the void left by the State. As theseinstitutions do not seek profits, a specific way to assess their results is required. As such, the purpose ofthis paper is to propose the application of the Value Added Structure in a third-sector institution, with thepurpose of demonstrating the process of formation and distribution of results in non-profit institutions. TheValue Added Statement (VAS) was applied in the Research Development Foundation (FUNDEP), a nonprofitinstitution that supports education and research in the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Itwas discovered that this statement contributed to explain the value creation by the foundation, and especiallyto increase transparency in management and in the sustainability process of the entity.
