Abstract

The growing urbanization of society confers different ways of analisys in the relationship between rural and urban areas, with this last having more emphasis. The objective is to see how the rural is conceived and performed by students from elementary schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In one of the largest urban centers in the country, are found difficulties in providing world-views that show the countryside and rural spatiality as areas with its own dynamics in terms of human presence and action. The tool chosen to evaluate students' conceptions of the 7th year of elementary school was the use of drawings in which they were asked how they thought the rural or the countryside contrasting with the view over the city. After performing the activity it became clear to us the need to broaden in the school the debate on rural areas, as well as their relationship with the city. In terms of teaching geography a possible way out is the re-discussion and appreciation of the concept of landscape.
