Abstract

The rural youth is category constructed socially, which is characterized in inherent transience of global cultural process of modernity to post-modernity and at the same time, incorporates a process of location cultural transition, which rural, in addition to supplying and complement urban, receives strong implications of urban cultural. The question is how the rural youth absorb and organize themself in context of liquid modernity in which, according to Bauman (2005, 2001, 2000, 1998), the detachment, the temporariness and the accelerated process of individualization and insecurity command human relations. This research aimed to characterize postmodernity and identify it scope in rural cities in the Quarta Colônia of Italian Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The methodology consisted of a literature review in order to contextualize post-modernity or liquid modernity. In this context we search to recognize some characteristics of liquid modernity in rural youth and preparing the survey instrument (questionnaire). It was found that social networks are responsible for the promotion of languages and universal fads and drive for consumerism and the fluidity and inconstancy of human relationships in rural youth. However, the youth showed to be subjected to an ambiguity: cultivates strong sense of belonging to the place and the family and at the same time, he feels driven by money technology and market logic. These statements infer the strengthening of an “individualistic culture”, consumerism and insecurity among rural youth.
