Abstract

This article is the result of research carried out with university students of the Licentiate in Vernacular Languages course at a public university in the state of Bahia. The research aimed to investigate how these students understood the literacy process. We perceive this investigation as an important element in view of the relevance of teacher training based on critical and reflective assumptions. In its structuring, the work presents a brief description of the different conceptions of literacy and its connection with the social, cultural and historical context of a given society. In effect, we start from the following question: What do students of the vernacular letters course understand by literacy? With a view to answering this question, we used a qualitative and descriptive methodology. Data were analyzed from Bardin's content analysis with the help of Orange Canvas software in version 3.33.0. The results achieved allow us to verify that the research participants have a conception of literacy that is linked to the perspective of ideological literacy. Among the main authors that make up the theoretical framework of our analysis and reflection are cited and quoted: Janks (2016; 2018); Kleiman (1995); Pereira (2014); (2013); Street (2014); Soares (2019); Freire (2019a; 2019b;).
