Abstract

The rules complexity and the evaluation process of Artistic Gymnastics (AG) demands a profound knowledge of the Code of Points (CP) by the judges, coaches and gymnasts with the objective of obtaining coherent interpretations of it. The changes that occur in the CP make this sport face a restructuration, seeking adaptation and new forms to maintain its competitive efficiency. This study provides an analysis of the main changes in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) Code of Points throughout the years showing how the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) tries to provide to the judges, coaches and gymnasts a document that may guide then to the development of competitions, to the preparation of gymnasts and for the construction of the exercises in order to fulfill the esthetical and technical expectations of each period. This study was a bibliographic research where the main source of data was the editions of the MAG’s CP. The CP is a historical and official document developed by FIG. We have concluded that even a traditional sport such AG seeks to fulfill the demands inherent in the progress of this sport trying to maintain competitive efficiency through changes in the rules showing that AG can be considered a sports in constant evolution.
