Abstract

The proportion of elders in the population continues to grow, but they still suffer social segregation, especially those who live in homes for the aged. Dance is among the physical activities they use to do, but little is known about dance and institutionalized elders. The goal of this study was to analyze social inclusion among people who take part in dance events at one of these homes. 30 residents and 30 visitors were observed taking part in those activities, during one year. Data were registered at a camp diary and images were recorded with digital cameras. It was observed that interpersonal relations experiences happened predominantly among the visitors; residents performed few activities, playing few social role. But dance environment promote manifestation of resources and person attributes that may collaborate with social integration of elders. Discussions are needed to allow changes in the activities and attitudes related to elders.
