Abstract
Several physiological indexes can be used to evaluate the intensity of the effort, such as heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), blood lactate [BLa-] and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). The aim of the study was to evaluate and to compare the responses of the RPE and [BLa-] in an official karate competition. Seven athletes participated in a state level competition, where [BLa-] and RPE obtained from two scales, Borg 6-20 (RPE6-20) and CR-10 (RPECR-10), were measured to estimate the intensity of the effort. The mean ± standard deviation values were: peak of [BLa-] = 7.6 ± 1.4 mM, RPE6-20 = 12 ± 3 and RPECR-10 = 3 ± 1. Strong relationships were found between PSECR-10 and [Lac]pico (r = 0.82) and moderate between PSE6-20 e [Lac]pico (r = 0.62). According to the results, one observed that both scales can be applied efficiently to measure the effort accomplished by karate athletes during the competition.Downloads
