Classifying movement skills: a case for multidimensional models

Abstract

Movement skills may be classified in a variety of ways. Traditionally one-dimensional schemes have been used. They are, however, limited in their utility in terms of “real-world” movement situations. Two-dimensional schemes are somewhat better in that they are more inclusive, but they still lack the “real worldness” of multi-dimensional schemes. Although more complex 5 dimensional schemes provide us with a rubric for understanding learners at all skill levels, and translating this understanding into action through effective teaching.
