This work describes the impact of fish culture on water quality and presents a system to mitigate the negative effects. Each pond of the fish culture was treated with organic fertilizers or fish diet. The discharges of these ponds passed through an artificial lake which served as a retention system for fish escapees and nutrients. Over 2 years and 3 months water quality was investigated in the water intake of the fish culture, in the ponds, and in the lake. The fish culture caused significant (P < 0.05) eutrophication but after passing the lake, water quality data were similiar to the data of the intake. The growth of the fish escapees in the lake removed nutrients and resulted in an annual production of 1.5 t.Downloads
