Concept of wilderness applied to latin americans from the 19th to the 20th century.

Abstract

The aim of the work is to critically analyze the concept of Wilderness applied to so-called Latin Americans during the 19th and 20th centuries, analyzing the textual sources of Brazilian and American authors, including Theodore Roosevelt's own account. In the first part, the theoretical basis will be built on knowledge of the 19th century context, the understanding of Latin America as inferior and the epistemological study of the word Wilderness, in addition to the idea of ​​the “Myth of the Frontier”; the second part will observe the term Wilderness in the Roosevelt-Rondon expedition, combined with the book “Through the Brazilian Wilderness” by the former North American president. In conclusion, the marks of this pejorative concept will be presented in the 21st century, also bringing a context of resistance and struggle to break with these conceptual structures.
