Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

1. Acta Scientiarum. Human and Social Sciences, ISSN 1679-7361 (print) and ISSN 1807-8656 (on-line), is published twice a year by the State University of Maringá, Maringá, Paraná State Brazil.
2. The journal publishes original papers in area of Human and Social Sciences.
3. Author(s) should state that the manuscript, reporting original work, was not sent, in part or in whole, for publication to another scientific journal. This statement may be found at down.
4. Papers are expected to be based on the most advanced theories and research.
5. Data, concepts, opinions and the preciseness of works cited are the author’s/ authors’ entire responsibility.
6. Papers are published in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French. They must be concise and consistent in style.
7. Articles shall be evaluated by the Editorial Board of the review and, if approved, will be sent to referees, renowned for their research in their specific field of knowledge and hailing from universities in Brazil or abroad. After appropriate corrections and possible suggestions, the article will be accepted for publication if two of the referees’ reports are favorable; it will not be accepted if two peer reviews are unfavorable. Ties are the sole responsibility of the Editorial Board.
8. Articles are to be sent via Internet through the Portal ACTA.
9. As from 2010 authors are accountable for the revision of the text in Portuguese or for its translation into a foreign language. Text revision and translation should be paid for by the authors to the authorized revisors who will forward a certificate to this end.
10. Formatting and conventions are as below:
a) On submission the full name(s) of the author(s) (six at the most), her/his/their institutional address(es) and the e-mail of the author for correspondence should be inserted.
b) Artcles must include: abstract, keywords and references/works cited.
c) The title, with no more than 20 words, in Portuguese and in English, must be precise. A running title with no more than six words may be provided. In the case of foreign authors, the translation of the title, abstract and key words into Portuguese will be done by one of the sub-editors.
d) The abstract (not exceeding 150 words) should contain information about the aim of the investigation, theory, methods, results and conclusions. Up to six key words must be provided at the end of both abstracts in Portuguese and in English and should not include words found in the title.
e) Papers should not exceed 20 pages, including figures, tables and list of references. The paper should be edited in Word for Windows, using Times New Roman 12-p font. Pages should be numbered and main text in 1.5 cm-line spacing.
f) Paper format should be A4, with all page margins at 2.5 cm.
g) File containing the article to be transferred during submission should not exceed 2MB, and should have no identification label of the author, including in the option properties of Word.
h) Tables and figures should be included in the text. Illustrations in color are not accepted for publication.
i) Figures and tables should be preferentially 7.65 cm wide, not exceeding 16 cm.
j) Digitalized figures should have a 300 dpi resolution and recorded in jpg.
k) Footnotes should be kept to a minimum.
l) References must be presented in alphabetical order, according to examples below, following the ABNT style sheet. For citations in the text, use the name and year system: Caporalini (2005) or (CAPORALINI, 1980); for two authors Veiga and Santos (2008) or (VEIGA; SANTOS, 2008); for more than two authors use et al. (GHEORGHIU et al., 2008).

REFERENCE MODELS

References should be listed in alphabetic order and justified, according to the examples below, based on the Brazilian Association for Technical Rules (ABNT). Titles of reviews should not be abbreviated but given in full, without by place of publication.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
