Abstract

The application of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in the black oat (Avena strigosa Schieb) can promote larger development and coverage when cultivated in low fertility soils. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the phosphorus and nitrogen application regarding the black oats’ development, nutritional value and production of dry matter. An experiment was conducted at Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), from October 27 (2004) to February 27 (2005), using 5 dm3 vases with substratum of a dystrophic Red Latosol. The design was completely randomized, analyzed in factorial outline 4x2, with 3 replications. The treatments consisted of four doses of P (25; 75; 150 and 300 mg dm-3), and two doses of N (100 and 300 mg dm-3). After 120 days of sowing, the development of the plants was evaluated per vase, starting from the height and the number of tillers, and the production of dry matter in the aerial part and in the root. At the same time, the amount of P in the soil and the macronutrients in the aerial part and in the root were determined. The 200 mg dm-3 application of P in the substratum with low amounts of nutrients improved its nutritional value and promoted the development of the plants. The high level of N (300 mg dm-3) harmed the development and the production of dry matter of the black oats. The largest production of dry matter of the black oats was associated to the concentration of P in the soil being close to 100 mg dm-3, and in the aerial part the concentration of P was 2.7 g kg-1.
